Riding the Yangon Circular Train in Myanmar

Riding the circular train is one of best way on a budget to see the city of Yangon. For less than 1 USD, it covers a distance of 45.9 kilometers and stops at 39 stations.

After the long 9 hours ride, we finally arrived at Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Station. We took a Grab to Yangon Central Railway Station and bought our train tickets. The train guards were very friendly. They let us into their ticket office to rest then showed us to our train when it arrives.

Since we had serveral hours to spare before our flight back, we decied to take the 3 hours ride to kill some time, hopefully catch some rest and catch a glimpse of the daily routine of the Myanmar people.

The train rocks and rumbles as we make our way slowy through the 39 stations. Stopping only a minute or 2 between stations, the locals clamber onto the train lugging their belongings. Hawkers hopped on carrying food in a huge basket by balancing them on their head and selling them to the passengers.

Some of passengers were as tired as we are and taking a good sleep on the circular train. I noticed an interesting way some of the Myanmar people sits. They fold their legs placing them on the seat and facing the front or the back of the train.

As we travel further, the landscape changes from the bustle city to rice fields and rustic villages. Unknowingly, 3 hours passed and we were back at the Yangon Central Railway Station.
